About Us
History of Falesizwe Senior Secondary School
Falesizwe Senior Secondary School was established in January 1973, initially operating from two classrooms loaned by Meduwaneng Public School. In 1975, the school received its own building, consisting of eight classrooms and an administration block. Further developments followed in 1978, adding a library, laboratory, home economics centre, and woodwork centre. Three additional classrooms were built in 1981. On 9 August 1985, construction began on a major expansion, which included 23 classrooms, four laboratories, two home economics centres, an administration block, rest rooms for labourers, and a caretaker’s house. This project was completed in early 1987.
The school started with just 50 students, catering to learners from Frankfort, Villiers, Tweeling, and surrounding farm schools. Rapid growth meant that by 1978, the available classrooms could not accommodate all learners. Arrangements were made to use extra classrooms at Meduwaneng until additional space was built at Falesizwe in 1981. By 1986, the school again faced shortages, borrowing four classrooms from Gugulethu Public School until the new facilities were ready. Student numbers grew to 1,680 by 1988. Academically, Falesizwe maintained a pass rate of over 70% since its first Standard Eight examination in 1975, ranking first in the Orange Vaal Region in 1980. Matric classes began in 1985, and the school went on to achieve second place in Standard Ten results in 1986 and third place in 1987, earning floating trophies on both occasions.
Falesizwe has also excelled in extracurricular activities, including music competitions, soccer, netball, volleyball, softball, boxing, and karate. Initially staffed by two teachers, the school grew to employ 44 educators. Leadership over the years has included principals Mr. PK Mzamane (1973–1978), Mr. SP Motaung (1978–1984), Mr. DJ Radebe (1984–1985), Mr. HM Mthombeni (1985–1987), Mr. PH Hlubi (1988–retirement), Mr. MJ Magagula, and Mr. P. Motloung, with Mr. LA Motsoeneng also serving as acting principal. Long-serving administrative staff such as Ms. Selina Mngomezulu and Ausi Mapule Olckers have been key to school operations.
In 1990, the school suffered significant damage during riots, affecting multiple classrooms, the laboratory, home economics centre, woodwork centre, caretaker’s house, and labourers’ rest rooms. Although parents pledged to raise funds for repairs, the costs proved too high. Proposals were made to repurpose facilities and improve security with burglar-proofing for storerooms, offices, and laboratories. Over the years, dedicated support staff including Ausi Mapopi Kubu, Ausi Alina Matlakala Chele, and Abuti E. Mafobokoane have contributed to the school’s resilience. Despite challenges, Falesizwe Senior Secondary School remains a centre of academic excellence and community pride.
Falesizwe Secondary School is committed to academic excellence and holistic learner development.
